Gestural movements gain drama through the relationship between image, movement and sound. This video features Liu Fang improvising with the pipa (a Chinese string instrument) to a heron’s slow walk.

About the musician: Liu Fang was born in the Province of Yunnan in 1974. She graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory for Music in l993. Since having moved to Canada in l996 she has achieved an international reputation for her masterful and deeply spirited pipa playing (a Chinese string instrument). In June 2001 she was awarded the Millennium Prize for Future Generations by the Canada Council for the Arts.
